Characterization

When you first start reading the book you see everything through the eyes of Darrow, and Darrow is the main character of the book. Especially in the first 30 pages you really get to know his life underground. Especially Eo who is one of the most important characters in the beginning. It’s also a perfect example how you get to know most of the characters. The most information about her you can get while reading his thoughts, also her actions are very important for her character. For example, he says on page 21: “Without me, she would not eat. Without her. I would not live.” This indicates that Eo must be very loved by him and she takes care of him. That’s how you`ll get to know her. Also, is she one of the first rebels who created the rising. This is mainly shown by her actions. When she for example says to Darrow: "Break the chains." Page 45. The most violent one was singing the song of Persephone, this song is forbidden because of the rebellion it can create.

The punishment for singing this song is execution which shows that golden have no mercy. This is the way she died, as a rebel. You also get to know the colors through his thoughts and some of they`re actions. Most of the time the characters get an introduction through his thoughts you`ll know how they are and what he thinks about them. After that you`ll learn more about them by their discussions and actions. The colors are also very pronounced characters most of them will react and act as they are expected to. For example, golden can be very arrogant. And the way they act completely fulfills that expectation.
